Sounds a lot like today's school meals!
Did you know that March is National Nutrition month? The truth
is that every day is a celebration of good nutrition in our school
cafeterias.
Unfortunately, the "definition" of good nutrition seems
to change over time and consequently there is often disagreement
on what foods/meals are "REALLY" nutritous.
Allow me to try answering this question. First, nutritious
meals include foods that taste great because they were
carefully prepared and presented in ways that make us want
to eat them. They of course contain
"lower" levels of fat and sodium, while being a good source
of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals...In plain English, nutritious
meals often contain a variety of lean meats, low fat dairy, lots
of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. This sounds a lot like
today's school breakfast and school lunch. And, at an approximate
charge of $2, School meals are a GREAT VALUE.
Let us celebrate the important work that you do every day creating
a welcoming cafeteria enviroment whose mission is to serve nutritious
meals to hungry children at school. My Italian heritage with its
love of food instinctively tells me that there are not many things
more important that this!
